The law does not mandate paid maternity leave in the U.S. However, some employers may offer it as part of their benefits package. The FMLA provides for unpaid leave but does not require paid leave. Check with your employer for their specific policies.
Can pregnancy affect my job promotion chances?
No, employers cannot deny a promotion due to pregnancy. Decisions about promotions should be based on qualifications and abilities, not related to pregnancy, childbirth, or associated conditions. Denying promotion on these grounds is considered discrimination.
Is pregnancy considered a disability under the law?
While pregnancy itself is not considered a disability, related medical conditions might be covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Employers may need to provide accommodations similar to those for employees with disabilities.
Can I be fired for being pregnant?
No, firing someone for being pregnant is illegal. Pregnancy discrimination violates the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. However, employers can terminate a pregnant employee for legitimate, non-discriminatory reasons unrelated to pregnancy.
